Living on Florida’s Treasure Coast means hurricane preparation is part of owning a home. We watch the forecasts, keep an eye on the tropics, and know how quickly conditions can change.
But the best storm protection upgrades should do more than help during a few stressful days each hurricane season.
Impact windows and doors can become part of the way your home performs every single day — improving protection, comfort, security, and even the amount of work required when a storm approaches.
That is what makes them different from many other hurricane protection options.

Protection That Is Already in Place
One of the biggest advantages of impact windows is simple: there is nothing to install when a hurricane is approaching.
Impact-resistant windows use laminated glass and reinforced window systems designed to resist windborne debris. The glass can crack after a severe impact, but its laminated construction is designed to help keep the opening intact.
That matters because protecting the openings of a home is an important part of maintaining the building envelope during a high-wind event.
FEMA’s latest residential wind retrofit guidance describes impact-resistant windows and doors as a form of passive protection — unlike temporary shutters, they do not need to be installed or deployed before a storm.
For Florida homeowners, that can mean fewer ladders, fewer panels to store, and one less major task to worry about when a storm is approaching.
And Hurricane Season Is Only Part of the Story
Impact windows stay in your home 365 days a year.
That means homeowners can benefit from their construction long after hurricane season ends.
Laminated glass can help reduce the amount of outside noise that enters the home. For properties near US-1, busy neighborhoods, construction, lawn equipment, or other everyday sources of noise, the difference can be noticeable.
Modern impact window systems can also be configured with energy-efficient glass options such as Low-E coatings designed to help control solar heat gain — an important consideration in a Florida climate where air conditioning works hard for much of the year.
And because laminated impact glass is significantly more difficult to penetrate than ordinary window glass, it can add another layer of resistance against forced entry.
Impact windows should never be marketed as making a home “burglar-proof,” but making an opening substantially more difficult to breach can still provide homeowners with additional peace of mind.
A 2026 Hurricane Season Reminder
Interestingly, NOAA’s August 2026 update now predicts a 75% chance of a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season, with an expected 7–13 named storms, 2–6 hurricanes, and 0–2 major hurricanes.
That sounds encouraging.
But NOAA also notes that August, September, and October are typically when most Atlantic hurricane activity occurs.
A quieter season does not make an individual home safer if the wrong storm follows the wrong track.
The goal of permanent storm protection is not to react to every seasonal forecast. It is to have a home that is prepared before the forecast matters.
Impact Protection May Also Affect Your Insurance Costs
There is another reason Florida homeowners should understand their home’s wind protection.
Florida requires admitted homeowners insurance companies to offer hurricane-loss mitigation discounts or credits for qualifying improvements. Eligibility depends on the specific features of the home, the insurance carrier, and a properly completed wind mitigation inspection.
Opening protection — including qualifying impact-resistant windows and doors — can be one of the features documented during that inspection.
Installing impact windows does not guarantee a specific insurance discount, so homeowners should always verify potential savings with their insurance company.
But after completing a qualifying improvement, it can be worthwhile to update your wind mitigation inspection rather than assuming your insurer automatically knows what changed.
There Is Also a New Florida Home-Hardening Benefit
Florida homeowners considering an upgrade in 2026 have another reason to look carefully at timing.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Florida extended its Home Hardening Sales Tax Exemption program through June 30, 2029.
Qualifying products can include impact-resistant windows, exterior doors, and garage doors that meet required wind-pressure and impact-resistance standards.
For eligible homesteaded, site-built homes valued at no more than $700,000, homeowners may qualify for a sales-tax refund of up to $500, subject to the program’s requirements.
It will not pay for an impact-window project, but if you already plan to harden your home, it is a benefit worth knowing about.
The Window Is Only Half of the System
This is something that often gets overlooked.
Buying “impact glass” is not enough.
A window must be appropriate for the opening, location, required design pressures, installation method, and applicable Florida Building Code requirements. The frame, glass, anchors, installation, and structure around the opening all work together as a system.
Florida maintains a product-approval system where homeowners and contractors can verify whether products are approved as impact resistant and review their limitations of use.
That is why choosing the right product — and installing it correctly — matters just as much as the logo printed on the window.
Think About the Home You Want After the Storm Is Gone
Hurricane protection is usually what starts the conversation about impact windows.
It does not have to be the only reason to install them.
The right system can mean no panels to install before a storm, less outside noise on an ordinary Tuesday, better control of Florida’s heat, additional security when you leave home, and a cleaner exterior without permanently visible storm panels.
Those are benefits you can appreciate long before the next hurricane appears on a map.
